Here to There by Larry Stuenkel
These questions
are similar to what you can expect during a real interview. Being
prepared will enable you to think on your feet.
The suggested replies, excerpted from From Here to There
by Larry Stuenkel, aren't intended to give you one correct answer.
Rather, the answers should reflect your personal frame of reference,
based on your motives, goals, work skills and aspirations. The replies
are meant to stimulate your thinking, not to be memorized.
Q: What kind of salary are you worth?
In all salary questions, your first basic response should be that
you are open to discussion. You want to avoid a number because the
minute you start to discuss salary in terms of numbers, you start
to close the sale. Pre-closure can destroy the sale. Many times
the sale falls apart when an individual starts to discuss money
up front and has not finished selling themselves.
Remember, by replying "open," you are indicating you're open to
listen to a competitive offer. This is the only answer you can share
that will not blow you out of the water by suggesting a compensation
that is too high for the immediate company to handle or, even worse,
to leave money on the table because you were not assertive enough
to ask for the appropriate amount.
What are you looking for in terms of salary? "I am open to a competitive
offer."
