Handle the difficult questions
Excerpted from From Here to There by Larry Stuenkel
These questions are similar to what you can expect during a real interview. Being prepared will enable you to think on your feet.

The suggested replies, excerpted from From Here to There by Larry Stuenkel, aren't intended to give you one correct answer. Rather, the answers should reflect your personal frame of reference, based on your motives, goals, work skills and aspirations. The replies are meant to stimulate your thinking, not to be memorized.

Q: Will you be out to take your boss's job?

The keyword here is "take." You aren't out to take your boss's job, but if the position became available, you would like to be considered. This shows that you have aspirations of moving upward. In fact, in many situations that opportunity may never come to you, but you want to show that if it does you would like to be considered. It shows that you are positive, cooperative and flexible.

Consider who might ask this question. For example, "Will you be out to take your boss's job," might be answered differently if the person asking the question is the manager of recruitment or your potential immediate superior.

Try responding, "No, I would not be out to take my boss's job, but if his/her position became available, I would hope that my current and past performance would enable me to be one of the persons considered for the position." Or possibly, "My goal is to help my boss get promoted and become the best candidate for that position."
